Papermaking is the third largest user of titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide must be used in decorative paper, Bible paper, and paper currency (such as dictionaries, magazines, magazine covers, computers, banknotes, copier paper, and decorative paper). Paper made with titanium dioxide has good whiteness, high strength, luster, thin and smooth texture, and does not penetrate during printing. Under the same conditions, its opacity is 10 times higher than that of calcium carbonate and talcum powder, and its weight can be reduced by 15% to 30%. Low end paper generally does not use titanium dioxide due to production cost considerations. It mainly uses porcelain clay, talc powder, calcium carbonate, etc., but it will reduce the strength of the paper and increase its weight.

Due to the high demand for home decoration and high-end furniture, the amount of decorative paper is gradually increasing; Due to the use of titanium dioxide as raw material, the cost of Bible paper is much higher than that of ordinary paper. Considering the domestic consumption level, the market for Bible paper is very limited; The production and use of coinage paper are subject to national control, with relatively stable usage and no impact on the titanium dioxide market. According to incomplete estimates, the amount of titanium dioxide used for decorative paper in China exceeds 30000 tons per year. The amount of titanium dioxide used in decorative paper is 20-40%, while in other papers it is 1-5%.

Titanium dioxide has three types of crystals in nature: titanium plate type, anatase type, and rutile type. Plate titanium type is an unstable crystal form with no industrial value. Anatase type, abbreviated as A type, and Rutile type, abbreviated as R type, both have stable crystal lattices and are important white pigments and porcelain glazes. Compared with other white pigments, they have superior whiteness, coloring power, covering power, weather resistance, heat resistance, and chemical stability, especially without toxicity. Performance characteristics: high whiteness and strong coverage. Hydrophilic and oleophilic products overcome the shortcomings of general titanium dioxide, such as difficulty in dispersion and easy precipitation in their respective dispersion systems, significantly improving their dispersibility and anti precipitation properties, and having strong weather resistance.

Another important application area of titanium dioxide in papermaking is decorative paper, also known as titanium white paper, which is mainly used as a raw material for making furniture, flooring, wallpaper, etc. In China, the amount of titanium dioxide used for decorative paper is much higher than other varieties. According to incomplete estimates, the amount of titanium dioxide used for decorative paper in China exceeds 30000 tons per year. The amount of titanium dioxide used in decorative paper is 20% to 40%, while in other papers it is 1% to 5%. Especially as China's consumption level continues to rise. Therefore, there is a large demand for house decoration and high-end furniture, and the amount of decorative paper is gradually increasing.

The types of titanium dioxide selected for different paper products also vary. Rutile titanium dioxide has good oxidation resistance and weather resistance, and is mainly used for decorative paper and weather resistant, high ash paper. Although both the chlorination process and the sulfuric acid process can produce rutile titanium dioxide, the whiteness, rutile crystal content, and especially the stability of the finished product of the titanium dioxide produced by the chlorination process are better than those of the sulfuric acid process, making it suitable for use in decorative paper and high ash paper; In coinage paper and low ash paper, sulfuric acid method anatase type products must be used to better meet the opacity requirements of titanium dioxide for both types of paper.

Decorative paper, also known as titanium white paper, is mainly used as a raw material for making furniture, flooring, wallpaper, and so on. Rutile must be used for paper with anti-aging requirements; More rutile is used in high ash paper, which requires the use of rutile because the hiding power of rutile titanium dioxide does not meet the requirements. At present, decorative paper is also the largest application area of titanium dioxide in papermaking. The national decorative paper production capacity is around 500000 tons, and the application of titanium dioxide accounts for more than 30% of the output. Sharp titanium white is commonly used in low ash paper, such as Bible paper and banknotes. Bible paper requires good opacity, which can generally be met by using sharp titanium white; Mint paper also requires good opacity, mainly using sharp titanium type.
